Commander of the Libyan National Army, Khalifa Haftar, vowed that his forces will defeat any “plot to build foreign bases that support and finance terrorism in Libya.”
In his first comments on the LNA’s destruction of a Turkish military base in Misrata city, he revealed that he personally oversaw the airstrikes against Turkish operations centers.
The LNA had destroyed on Sunday an under-construction Turkish base near the air force academy in Misrata, 200 kilometers east of Tripoli.
Turkey and the Tripoli-based Government of National Accord have yet to comment on the development.
LNA spokesman Ahmed al-Mismari had stated over the weekend that the air force academy had “almost transformed into a Turkish military base.”
Addressing a press conference in the eastern city of Benghazi, he displayed a map that showed before and after images of the construction of hangars housing Turkish drones in the city.
He warned that allowing the completion of the construction would have deepened the crisis in Libya.
“We therefore, opted to target it with airstrikes” that achieved their goals, he stressed.
He also warned anyone against interfering in Libyan affairs in such “flagrant” ways, saying they will meet the same fate of the Turkish base
“This strategic military action is directed towards Turkey and traitors, not Misrata or any other party,” Mismari clarified.
Addressing the Libyan people, he said: “We are fighting for you. We did not arrive from abroad. We are the people of Libya and this war is aimed against conspirators who are plotting against the country in Misrata and seeking to sell a peace of its precious land to Turkey.”
