The president of the African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC), Domingos Simões Pereira, said that the party was chosen to govern and that it is determined to do so and without allowing interference in the process.
“We have been chosen to govern and that is what we are determined to do in full compliance with the Constitution of the Republic and the laws, making the choices that our conscience and the statutes of our party dictate in conjunction with the parties of our partnership to materialize the yearnings and aspirations of all our people, not accepting, nor allowing any strange interference with this process, “said Domingos Simões Pereira.
The chairman of the PAIGC and former prime minister spoke at the inauguration ceremony of the new parliamentarians from Guinea-Bissau elected in the legislatures of 10 March, which took place in a hotel unit in Bissau and which counted on the participation of more than 300 people, including representatives of the international community.
“In this perspective, I bow to the Guinean people and their incessant proof of maturity and resilience in accepting the challenge of overcoming the transition, restoring national sovereignty and constitutional normality,” said Domingos Simões Pereira.
The PAIGC won the 2014 legislative elections, but Domingos Simões Pereira was dismissed from the role of prime minister in August 2015, which began a serious political crisis in the country, which eventually became mediated by the international community, mainly the community States of West Africa.
In the elections last month, the PAIGC elected 47 MPs for the Guinean parliament and announced a parliamentary and governmental coalition with the United People’s Assembly – Guinea- Bissau Democratic Union, Union for Change and New Democracy Party, achieved a majority of 54 Members.
“In this improvised room at the ANP (National People’s Congress) plenary, which even modestly tries to reproduce the refinements that modern civilization has convened for acts of this symbolism and scope we are a hundred privileged, wearing our best facts, perhaps acquired in large boutiques of the western world, all in keeping with the times we live in and with the universal standards of development, “said Domingos Simões Pereira.
What does not fit, continued the president of PAIGC, is the fact that there are thousands outside who listen and follow us while they wait for signs that can give them comfort and hope that we are gathered here not by ourselves, not to attend to our urban elite egos, but to symbolize every woman and every man in this society and Nation. ”
In his speech, Domingos Simões Pereira said that all Members must be aware that “thousands of people feel excluded from this perspective, whether for the health that is not enough for them, whether for the education they are deprived of or, above all, , for the lack of opportunity in a country surrounded by so many ingredients “.
“Democracy has this magic, of always putting us back to the starting point,” he said.
