Angola Steps Up Security for New Year Eve with 70,000 Troops

Angola_ArmyAngola stepped up security in its streets with 70,000 troops, 15,000 of them in Luanda, for the New Year”s Eve days and the beginning of next year, announced a police source quoted by the media.

The chief of the central command, Commissar Caetano Quiari, said the conditions are assured for Angolans to have quiet holidays in a country where assaults and robberies have increased and murders have decreased, according to National Police reports without the corresponding statistical data.

Quiari urged the mobilized police to respect the norms of action and the citizens’ rights, and to denounce any attempt of extortion by the police.

The authorities are also working to raise the awareness of drivers and pedestrians in order to reduce traffic accidents, which annually cause about 2,500 deaths, making it the second leading cause of death in the country.
